Directions to Captain James Preston House

From TF Green Airport:
• Pick up Route 95 South. Stay on Route 95 South to Route 4 South.
• Exit onto Route 4 South (this is a left exit off of 95S ). Take Route 4 South for approximately 25 minutes.
• Take the exit for Route 138 / Newport Bridges. (this exit will not have a number, you will have gone through a few traffic lights)
• Stay on Route 138 over both the Jamestown and Newport Bridge.
• Stay on the right over the Newport Bridge and take the first exit off of the bridge for Scenic Newport. Make a right at the end of the ramp.
• Follow the In Newport directions (located at the bottom of this page) to reach Captain Preston House.
From New York, New Jersey & Connecticut:
Take I 95 North through exit 93 in CT on your way to Providence, RI. You pass by Stamford, New London, and Mystic. Shortly thereafter you will cross the Rhode Island border. Take Exit 3A which will be marked for Route 138/Newport. Route 138 will take you through Kingston and past the University of RI to Route 1 where you take a left. Approximately 2 miles along you will see a sign for Route 138/Jamestown/Newport. Take this exit. This will take you over two bridges the second of which has a toll. Take the exit "Scenic Newport" at the end of the bridge and follow the "in Newport" directions.
From Western Connecticut:
Starting from Hartford, take Route 2 to Norwich where you will switch to Route 395 North. Follow this for about 5 miles to the turnoff to Route 138 and Voluntown. A mile or two after Voluntown, take the Route 138 split-off to the right. Follow this to the T-junction in Hope Valley where you take a left. After a mile or so, the road bends to the right and passes under I 95. Continue along Route 138 which will take you through Kingston and past the University of RI to Route 1 where you take a left. Approximately 2 miles along you will see a sign for Route 138/Jamestown/Newport. Take this exit. This will take you over two bridges the second of which has a toll. Take the exit "Scenic Newport" at the end of the bridge and follow the "in Newport" directions.
From Boston:
Take I 93 South to Route 24. Stay on this route which will take you into Rhode Island and onto Aquidneck Island. After 3 miles Route 24 will end and turn into Route 114. Stay on 114 which will take you into Newport. You will eventually pass by a shopping mall area with a Home Depot & Staples on your right. Continue straight, making a right onto Coddington Highway (watch for a Burger King on the left and an open field on the right) Follow this to the traffic circle. Stay to your right and take the exit that says Newport Bridge / Route 138 (it will be a quick right). Hold to the left at the fork for downtown Newport. From here follow the "in Newport" directions.
In Newport:
You are now on Farewell St. so named after the graveyards that line the road. At the second light make a right. You are now on America's Cup Ave. Start counting traffic lights. Stay in the right hand lane. At the 7th light make a right onto South Thames St. (a one way street lined with shops, the Red Parrot restaurant will be on the left).
Start counting blocks. Make a left on the eighth street, Pope Street. You will know you are there when you see the IYRS (International Yacht Restoration School) on your right. The Captain Preston House is at the next intersection at 378 Spring Street which is a one way street going North. Make a left on Spring, go past the house by one block and make a right on Fountain St., make another right at the corner on Anthony Street, and yet again another right on Pope and quick left into the parking lot at the rear of the house.
